Storage Without Clutter
In a small home, storage is architecture. Built in properly, it disappears; added piece by piece, it fills the room.
Edit before you store
The cheapest storage is owning less. Before designing cupboards, go through what you have and decide what is worth the space it takes.
Build it in
- Full-height cupboards read as a wall rather than as furniture.
- Storage under stairs, beds and window seats uses space that is otherwise wasted.
- Flush, handle-less doors in the wall colour make cupboards recede.
Match storage to frequency
Things used daily belong at hand height near where they are used. Seasonal items can go high, low or deep.
Leave some empty surfaces
A room where every surface holds something feels smaller. Keep at least one counter, table or shelf clear by design.
Plan for the door
A small entrance needs somewhere for shoes, coats and bags. If it is not planned, they end up in the living room.
