Small Kitchens That Work
A small kitchen can be a very good kitchen. The trick is keeping the main working points close, clear and well lit.
The working triangle
The kitchen work triangle is a long-standing layout concept: the main tasks happen between the cooktop, the sink and the refrigerator, so those three should be placed for easy movement between them without obstacles.
Layouts that suit small spaces
- Single wall. Everything along one wall; ideal for open-plan studios.
- Galley. Two parallel runs; very efficient if the gap is comfortable for one cook.
- L-shape. Uses a corner and leaves room for a small table.
Counter space is the real luxury
Most small-kitchen frustration comes from too little worktop. A continuous run beside the cooktop, even a short one, is worth more than an extra appliance.
Storage
- Drawers in base units are easier to use than deep cupboards.
- Take wall cabinets to the ceiling for rarely used items.
- Rails and shelves keep everyday tools within reach.
Ventilation
Cooking smells travel through a small home quickly. A properly ducted extractor is worth planning for from the start.
