Light in Small Spaces: Making Rooms Feel Larger
A well-lit small room feels generous; a dim one feels cramped whatever its size. Daylight first, then layers of artificial light.
Daylight first
Daylighting is the practice of using windows and other openings to bring natural light into a building. In a small home, do not block windows with tall furniture, and keep window treatments light.
Bounce it
- Pale walls and ceilings reflect light deeper into the room.
- A mirror opposite or beside a window spreads daylight.
- Glazed or partly glazed internal doors share light between rooms.
Layer artificial light
- General light for moving around.
- Task light where you cook, read or work.
- Accent light on a wall or shelf to give the room depth.
Light the edges
A single ceiling light in the middle leaves corners dark and makes the room look smaller. Lighting walls and corners pushes the edges outward visually.
Electrical work is regulated in most places. Use a qualified electrician for anything beyond plugging in a lamp.
